This is a zine that uses the story of an alcoholic pig named Arnold Ziffle to parody the twelve steps for addiction recovery. There are large black and white photos of a pig being fed milk by a bottle in a restaurant, which the author has labeled with different kinds of alcohol.
"A Call to Action is a poignant and uncompromising analysis of the criminal/justice system which spends millions of dollars annually, and controls the lives of approximately one million inmates--of which nearly two-thirds are Black and members of other non-white groups. Of particular concern is the over-representation of Black men who traverse the criminal justice system as though it was especially designed for them."
"Shane Bowermaster reaps the land to sustain the family pastime and habit; whiskey. Inspired to try his hand at brewing the beverage of choice, new trade consumes the Bowermaster family, leading them down a path toward one wild and wicked toast. A new legendary drink spreads throughout the region."
From the back cover: "Step into the Light" is a collection of poetry that casts a cold, hard eye on the coke-snorting, beer-swilling, pill-popping world of contemporary America as it lurches into the twilight of the twentieth century. This book speaks with a literary tongue that tells the grim story of addiction with honesty and gut-wrenching detail. But it also sings with joy and triumph about recovery, sobriety, and serenity.
