Date:
2007
Issue:
003
Abstract:
Amid the neoliberal transformation of Chicago--which extends capitalist market domination into every sphere, and substitutes competition and consumption for solidarity and social justice--the editors felt an urgent need to reclaim, rebuild, and redefine public space. The publication documents a period of cultural activism in Chicago stretching from 2000 to 2005, and covers various projects and organizations that responded to neoliberal restructuring. Topics include collective infrastructures, protest experiments, gentrification, public housing, and urban planning. (Adapted from introduction.)

The Case for Socialism

Catalog Number:
Book, Maass
Date:
2004
Abstract:
Suggesting socialism as an alternative to capitalism, the author of the book asserts this by presenting various cases of dysfunctions seen in capitalist societies, which are not mere coincidents but the very results of the capitalist system. Other parts of the book discuss how socialism is thus necessary and also possible.

Volume:
Vol. 1
Abstract:
Terry Plumming, published in Chicago, contains graphic work of a more "my roommate just gave me a whole ton of meth and now I think the walls are made of armpits" style. The jaggy drawings and contorted slogans that pack each page compliment the accompanying CD. Quite often a Terry Plumming CD makes me feel as if I'm hosting a seance through an AM radio and channeling the best of the noise tape-trading scene. Vital to the hope of any futher human mutation.

Abstract:

From the introduction: "Poetry as Social Engagement."

"Through distilled verse and hard imagery, I expose the effects of our social, cultural, and political practices on the human condition. My poetry explores the twisting of language for both political and personal gain. Growing up in domestic violence taught me about structures of power and dominance, about the use of violence and fear in order to control, and about the role of language in breaking the spirit."
