Donate & Support Read/Write Library
Read/Write Library is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit and the only library of its kind in the world. Through public programs that engage hundreds aged 6 to 75+ annually, free public browsing hours, 6,000+ item collection of local media, and open source catalog, we are deeply committed to not only scaling this organization in Chicago long-term but also to making our programs and catalog replicable for others.
Our goal is that any library, grassroots organization, or municipality who wants to start their own Read/Write Library — preserving, making visible, and activating what has been left out of the record — will be able to customize our programs for their local experience.
We've come along way since 2006 when the library was a filing cabinet in the basement of an Avondale coffeeshop, but we need your support to reach out across the Chicago area. Intentionally volunteer-run for 12 years, your donations will help us hire our first-ever paid staff members in 2018, and expand our public browsing hours, Pop Up Libraries, field trips, and exhibitions to ensure the true record of Chicago is written by the people who live here.
