Exhibition book for a showing of works by Kerry James Marshall at the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, May 6-June 28, 1998. Marshall works in the genre of history painting, seeking to "reread the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement and the whole of African-American history in relation to a very complex present" (Acknowledgements). The exhibit also included prints, sculpture, and video. Includes intepretive essays by Cheryl I. Harris and Richard J. Powell, with extracts from the writings of Will Alexander.

An institutional history of the Hyde Park Art Center published on the occasion of its relocation into its quarters at 5020 S. Cornell Ave.

Ira Bach describes architectural walks "selected to present Chicago as a great cosmopolitan city as well as a collection of local community areas, all tied together by an intricate web of transportation that makes them accessible to the pedestrian for a closer view."

Widely known as the "great" poet from Illinois, is especially remembered for his monumental three volume biographical stud of Abraham Lincoln. A journalist, author of children's stories, he edited a pathbreaking collection of songs, American Songbag. This new collection of his writings convey the excitement and tragedy of the times and his commitment to a movement to change them.

Henry Rosemont, a printer and labor activist/historian, explores many crucial but little-known aspects of American labor history in this collection of his articles. America's First Strike covers the role of Benjamin Franklin in the Philadelphia printers' strike of 1786; his influence on organized labor; the early union printers' support for the abolition of slavery; their leadership in the U.S. labor movement overall; and other issues such as the problem of technology and important labor battles like the Haymarket affair of 1886, the 1938-40 Newspaper Guild strike, and the Chicago newspaper strike of 1947-49. Dave Roediger wrote the introduction, and former Chicago 5th Ward alderman Leon Despres contributed a note about Rosemont, who was a personal acquaintance.

They illuminate it historical context through a discussion of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and the 1901 McMillan Plan for Washington, DC, its primary antecedents. Comparing its priorities and strategies with those of earlier and later plans of Chicago -- including projects by Frederick Law Olmsted, Frank Lloyd Wright, Jens Jenson, and Ludwig Hilberseimer -- Roche and Lasher offer a new approach to regional planning that combines the strengths and objectives of these various plans of Chicago.'

A collection of oral histories of descendant of Oak Park and River Forest's oral histories. Oral histories address a broad spectrum of topics ranging from farming, log cabins, Ernest Hemingway, the women's rights' movement and schools. Over 150 photographs accompany the interviews to provide an oral history of a visual picture of early village life.

This book is a series of candid portraits accompanied by poetry and monlogues given by the subjects. The words of some have been mixed and matched with others to tell new and differnt stories that still represent the collective Chicago Younker seeks to represent.
